2nd time in Huron in 2 weeks!

We were excited to return to Huron for another drought emergency food relief distribution on Thursday, August 20. That was our favorite element of our Crazy Love Tour, even though it was the hardest working day of the trip! We loved being able to personally interact with the people we were serving. Their smiles of gratitude and relief on their faces as they received food made the hard work worth it!

When Fresno's Community Food Bank heard that we were considering volunteering again, they called us to ask if we'd return this week to serve in Huron again. We were excited to find ourselves heading back to Huron one more time for this encore Crazy Love service project!

Although the temperatures soared into the 100s, we enjoyed working hard to make a difference. In fact, some of us even enjoyed it more this time than last time! We were also encouraged by the fact that other teenagers and adults joined us this time who didn't come on the Tour, having been inspired by the youth's testimonies. After serving both shifts and cleaning up the distribution site, we started the 2 1/2 hour drive back home. It was an awesome day!

Crazy Love Tour Finishes!

What a whirlwind of a week! We just finished our Crazy Love Tour, our seven-day "serve-a-thon" to provide meals and medical supplies to the poor. Never before have we had so much fun working so hard! While we knew that what we were about to accomplish would be significant, we had no idea just how much FUN we would have! By the end of the trip, many of us had come to the conclusion that this was the best week of our lives!

One of the high school students on this Tour, Matt, summed it up this way: "This Tour made me realize how much more we can do to help others. Just look at what 23 of us could do in just a week. Because of God, the results were tremendous! That's what the heart of this Tour is about, showing God's love to others."

Here are the results:

Day 1: Worked with Ag Against Hunger harvesting 7,200 lbs of celery in the fields for CA food banks

Day 2: Renovated the facilities at Giving Children Hope, which included mopping & buffing the floors, sorting and folding 6 giant bins of clothing donations, washing the outside walls, painting the floors & hallways, and cleaning their mobile medical unit inside & out for its debut in LA's RAM event in the Forum

Day 3: Volunteered at Children's Hunger Fund by gift-wrapping 615 grooming kits to be used for compassion ministries in the developing world & packaging 3 tons of beans for shipment.

Day 4: Partnered with Fresno's Community Food Bank to distribute drought emergency food relief to the people of Huron. We distributed two-weeks worth of food to feed 2,363 people!

Day 5: Provided a community BBQ for the residents of Mendota. 625 meals were served (consisting of carne asada, rice, beans, tortillas, dessert & a drink).

Day 6: Conducted a one-day, city-wide Food 4others Drive to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank. By partnering with the Church of God of San Jose, Antelope Road Christian Fellowship young adult and youth group, Burmese Christian Community youth group, Westgate Church middle school youth group, and Oak Grove Church youth group, we collected 13,342 lbs of food in one day!

Day 7: Sorted & packed 20 full boxes of medical supplies at MedShare International. These items will be made available to free clinics throughout northern CA & shipped to hospitals in the developing world.

And the best part... A group of 23 lives were changed by living 4 others!

Crazy Love Tour

Did you know that there are 963 million people in this world who are hungry today? In fact, one child dies every five seconds from hunger-related causes. Hunger is not only felt in developing nations. It's present in our own backyards. For instance, recent news articles have reported people in Mendota, CA boiling out-of-date milk to save money (according to The Fresno Bee and The Sacramento Bee). Mendota is a small city in Fresno County with an unemployment rate of 41 percent! The unemployment rate during the height of the Great Depression was 24.9 percent. Even Second Harvest Food Bank of San Jose has experienced a 15 percent increase in requests for emergency food aid over the last six months. They now serve 205,000 people every month! 67 percent are families with young children; 12 percent are senior citizens.

So, what can we do? The answer: We can make a difference.

This summer, we're calling all young people to start living their lives 4 others! On August 3-9, 2009, we will be conducting the Crazy Love Tour: a seven-day "serve-a-thon" to provide meals and medical supplies to the poor both here and across the world. Each day during this Tour we will be travelling to a city in CA to help meet the needs of the poor. For example, on August 8, we will travel to Mendota to provide a lunch for 500+ people and inspire hope. The following day, we will conduct a city-wide food drive in San Jose to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank. These are just a couple of the ways that we will be serving others on the Crazy Love Tour. For more details, look under CURRENT PROJECTS or GET INVOLVED at 4others.org.

While we'll be serving locally, we'll also be raising funds to fight extreme poverty in sub-Saharan Africa, where people are living on less than $1 a day. 100% of the funds we raise will go to our Tour's four partners to provide access clean water, relieve hunger, provide medical care, and alleviate poverty. Our partners are: African Water Project, Children's Hunger Fund, CURE International, and Opportunity International. (To make a donation, go to GET INVOLVED at 4others.org.)

But here's the thing: we can't do this alone. It's our desire to partner with young people, youth ministries, and churches throughout CA (and especially in our hometown of San Jose) to make an even greater impact! Some groups may join us on one of the days of the Crazy Love Tour. Other groups may decide to conduct their own service project/fundraiser before or during August 3-9, in conjunction with the Tour. Our goal is that at the end of the Tour, we'll be able to post the results (both from the Tour and your own service projects) and see just how much love we can show to the world around us in a short period of time.

Ready to make a difference? Numerous resources and opportunities are available under CURRENT PROJECTS or GET INVOLVED at 4others.org.

Together, we can change the world one place at a time!
